Interview with a local policy maker- Elected school board member
|
While watching the video try to answer these questions: 1. The public is allowed to watch a school board meeting. How or when can the public be heard during the meeting? 2. What else may influence the policy decision making by the school board trustees during a school board meeting? 3. What advice does Dr. Vartanian give for anyone participating in a meeting or on a decision making committee? 4. Dr. Vartanian mentions that leadership isn't about being charismatic, but about the ability to be able to influence others. How did Dr. Vartanian discover how he could be the most influential in his position as a public policy maker? How can you apply this advice? |
Watch a few minutes of this school board meeting, especially the beginning where you might hear some formal use of the Robert's Rules of Order or research the internet to find your own local school districts school board page and see if they post a video.

Dr. Vartanian mentioned the Robert's Rules of Order in his interview. If you want to learn more about how an official meeting is run, investigate this file below. (Take it a step further and practice running your own official meeting using the Robert's Rules of Order or attend a school PTO/PTA meeting or school board meeting and watch it in action.)
Optional: See a need for a new policy for your troop, team, classroom, home? Practice what you learned in this workshop about public policy making to state the need for change or problem, make a policy agenda, state goals, & formulate your plan of action (new program, rule, incentive...). Act out a mock committee meeting (or write a play) following Robert's Rules of Order to discuss the implementation of your new public policy! |
