Animals In Service-
(= Animal Helpers Cadette Badge) This workshop explores how animals have helped humans historically and currently by keeping humans safe physically and emotionally as well as helping those with disabilities. Scouts will experience 3 virtual video field trips to see how animals are trained for medical service, police service, and therapy. We will also explore how animals are being studied to find new ways to help humans in the future and design our own service animal training center. This workshop might lead into a larger service action project to fund-raise or volunteer for an animal shelter. Extra materials needed- none. Time- Approximately 2-3 hours. 5 stations that include scout led discussions, optional picture sharing, and 3-5 research facts to share. |
Book Making-
(= Book Artist Cadette Badge) In this workshop scouts will take a virtual video field-trip to a professional bookbindery and antique book restoration facility to learn about their tools, materials and end products. Scouts will learn from 2 video tutorials and practice their own skills at 2 different book binding techniques, paper-painting, other unique book features to create 2 of their own journals. Service action might include making a book as a gift for someone in a shelter. Extra materials needed or purchase most items through the Scout-it-out shop under Bookmaking Kit: 2 sheets card-stock paper, 2 sheets colored computer paper, 27 pages white computer paper, glue, q-tips, 2 large binder clips, waxed paper, heavy books or other object for weight, large tray or pan, toothpicks and straw, ½ t alum, 2 c. starch, acrylic paint, scissors, ruler. Time- Approximately 3 hours. This does not include some overnight drying time for glue and paint. 4 stations that include scout led discussions, craft projects and picture sharing. |
Budgeting
(= Budgeting Cadette Badge) Scouts will put into practice the valuable skills of budgeting and banking. They will evaluate and prioritize their wish lists. Scouts will take part in 2 online interactive videos that practice basic banking skills, savings skills, and making a budget, (Some math skills- adding, subtracting and percentages- will be put to use!) as well as learning about the different types of bank accounts including loans and credit. Scouts will also play a fun online “savings” game, conduct interviews and share philanthropy ideas with their workshop peers. A virtual video field- trip will take scouts to a non-profit organization to learn about how they make budgeting decisions. Service action might include allocating savings to donate to a favorite charity or the needs of others. Extra Materials needed: none Time- Approximately 2-3 hours, 5 stations. |
Business Entrepreneur
(= Entrepreneur Cadette Badge) Through a short video, scouts will learn basic terms and identify the steps in starting a new business as kids like themselves and other famous entrepreneurs/inventors have done. They will make observations through a series of scenarios and brainstorm a new business product or service ideas as they develop their own idea for an original, new business. Scouts will be instructed & guided to create a digital business model including customer, cost, & competitive analysis; they will create original marketing artwork & advertisements, and practice searching the USPTO patent and trademark website. Extra Materials Needed: none (optional- printer) Time: About 1-3 hours, 5 stations. |
Business Strategies
(= Business Plan Cadette Badge) Scouts will examine the qualities of a good business mission statement and create one of their own for their business, whether it be selling something they made, selling fundraiser items or selling a service such as babysitting, pet-sitting, mowing lawns or snow shoveling. Scouts will play a business simulation game. They will brainstorm and share marketing ideas to reach their target customers and create a detailed sales plan. This workshop includes a short video about good business strategies and asks how our scouts could incorporate these strategies into your sales. Scouts will practice thinking about solutions to worst case scenarios for a risk management plan. Service action might include helping someone younger with their business strategies for marketing and selling. Extra Materials Needed: none (optional- printer) Time: about 1 hour, 4 stations. |

Online Shopping Smarts
(= Comparison Shopping Cadette Badge) Do you love to shop? Do you want to use your brain to help persuade someone to buy you something? Do you want to make informed decisions about your purchases? This Scout-It-Out workshop provides instruction on how to safely and smartly shop online as well as practice the skill of comparison shopping. (No actual online purchases will be made.) After researching online to compare prices, fees, and reviews, scouts share in a persuasive debate to explain why purchasing a particular item from a particular store is the best choice. Scouts will from 3 short videos about marketing re-targeting and consumer technology; what to look for and do to avoid online shopping scams and fraud; and how to identify a shopping addiction as well. Service action might include educating elderly about what you learn in this workshop. Extra Materials Needed: none (optional- printer) Time: about 1-1.5 hours, 5 stations. |
Digital Video Production -
(= Digital Movie Maker Cadette Badge) A professional child actor living in Hollywood has put together a video just for us about their experiences in TV & film. Another video will summarize the basics about video production such as shots/camera angles, lighting, composition and some tricks of the trade etc. Scouts will be instructed and guided to create an authentic story board with a shot list and practice producing a 5 minute video using these basics. Careers in movie making and copyright are topics also addressed. Scouts will need to have access to Windows Movie Maker, iMovie or similar video editing software. Service action might include making a video to spread a message or educate about a cause. Extra Materials Needed: digital movie editing software (Windows Movie Maker or iMovie- pre-installed on most PCs/Macs), video recording device (phone or video mode on camera). Time: 4 stations, about 4-5 hours. |
Eating To Look & Feel Great!
(= Eating for Beauty Cadette Badge) A healthy body creates a healthy body image and knowing what to put into our bodies is a great place to start. Scouts watch a virtual guest speaker talk about her job as a professional nutritionist and learn that good choices with food and water can affect their skin, energy levels and over-all health. They will review the food pyramid and the "New American Plate" and compare it to their habits. They will evaluate what is already in their refrigerator and create and share healthy, meal-balanced recipes using a free website activity. Before and after pictures of different people will demonstrate the importance of sleep and water for beautiful skin. A focus of this workshop is to learn about the adverse effects of sugar and stress on the body and brainstorm ways to counter-act it. Two short informational videos will help further understand this & other topics regarding healthy bodies. Scouts will brainstorm solutions for drinking adequate water and for setting goals to improve their health. Extra Materials Needed:none Time: about 2 hours, 4 stations. |
Financing Your Future
(= Financing My Dreams Cadette Badge) What is your dream job, your dream home, your dream vacation, and future dreams in general? How will you make these dreams a reality? What will it take to get there? Students will take 2 personality tests to find out what might best fit them for a career and a dream vacation. Scouts will answer: What kind of money & education does it take to reach your dreams? Scouts will take a "reality check" quiz, choose a career and then be guided to calculate their monthly budget. Scouts will hit the real estate market online and "shop" for a budget- friendly home for themselves, as the house of their dreams. Scouts will be guided through a mortgage calculator and other price deciding factors. They will also plan and price their dream vacation and calculate how long they will need to save to reach that dream. Finally, scouts will watch a short video about philanthropic organizations that help people in need find homes, jobs and transportation. Extra Materials Needed: none Time: about 3 hours, 5 stations. |
Debate, Mediation & Compromise
(= Finding Common Ground Cadette Badge) Learning to make decisions that are fair to everyone involved in a group is a valuable leadership skill. Getting your voice heard in a respectful manner is also a good skill. In the spirit of respecting others different from ourselves, scouts will hear from someone originally from another country to understand their differences, similarities, their adjustments, and what we could do to help them feel welcome. Scouts will be guided to apply what they learn in this workshop about group decision making methods in order to brainstorm solutions to real life conflict scenarios. In addition, scouts will learn from a professional lawyer about mediation in the field of law and from students involved in a high school debate team. Scouts will then practice debate and compromise through several interactive online games and by participating in an online debate forum. Lastly, they will creatively share strategies for decision making through compromise in their lives and brainstorm how these skills might be useful in their future. Extra Materials Needed: none Time: about 3 hours, 5 stations. |
First Aid
(= First Aid Cadette Badge) Scouts will learn from a child care giver about how she prepares to prevent and treat medical emergencies when volunteering & using her nursing skills. Scouts will role play first aid for common illnesses and injuries including cuts, burns, nosebleeds, seizures, choking, etc. & how to do CPR. They will be able to apply this knowledge to real life experiences, such as babysitting. Students will benefit from a virtual interview with a first responder fire-fighter who will review how to use the items in a first aid kit, give safety advice for scouts to apply if they are ever the first to arrive on an emergency scene, teach scouts how to identify and treat shock, and he will share his advice for safety in cold temperatures from his time on ski patrol. Scouts will also hear from a trained search and rescue trail volunteer in the Grand Canyon. She will share her safety advice for being in the outdoor wilderness, particularly the desert environment. Scouts will practice, and teach their peers how to prevent, identify and administer first aid to common injuries in a fun and memorable way. Further service action might include sharing what they have learned with others and/or creating proper first aid kits to give away. Extra Materials Needed: baby doll or stuffed animal with arms and legs, first aid kit or items found in a kit (gauze, bandages, cold pack), digital camera (optional) Time: about 2 hours, 4 stations. |
Be A Good Sport!
(= Good Sportsmanship Cadette Badge) Scouts will visually experience both good and poor sportsmanship as well as historical examples of both through a video compilation. They will apply what they learned to creating their own personal definition of sportsmanship. Scouts will collaborate & create a digital collage of inspirational sportsmanship quotes. Scouts will learn about good sportsmanship in online gaming and practice team-building games online together. Scouts will brainstorm and share what to do in certain scenarios that may require good sportsmanship. As they hear from a professional sport psychologist, scouts will create a plan to put their own good sportsmanship into action! Further service action might include volunteering to help monitor and role-model good sportsmanship during a game or activity with younger kids. Extra Materials Needed: none Time: about 1-2 hours, 5 stations. |
Marketing
(= Marketing Cadette Badge) Scouts will investigate provided logos and slogans as they decipher the features of effective (and long lasting) branding and marketing campaigns. A short video will introduce the basics of brand identity and a history of product branding in Girl Scouts. Scouts will then share brief research on the branding history of a brand of their choosing. Going deeper, scouts will be provided information to "check out the competition" by comparing brands of cookies and their brand identities ending in an understanding of the brand identity of Girl Scouts and their Cookie Program. Scouts will learn about the philanthropic business plan used by several companies, including Girl Scouts. Scouts will learn about sly "tricks of the trade" that marketers use in promoting their product. Lastly, the workshop culminates with scouts using their knowledge from the workshop to create & share their own marketing plan for selling a product such as Girl Scout cookies. Future service action might include running a product stand (such as lemonade or a garage sale) that utilizes their marketing plan, logo and slogan in order to raise funds for a worthy cause. Netiquette (Digital Citizenship)
(= Netiquette Cadette Badge) Being safe and responsible online and in social media is more important than ever. Scouts will discuss the provided resources, as well as several videos and quiz games compiled & created in order to teach about Digital Citizenship in a fun and visual way. Scouts will brainstorm, critique, share, and problem solve. Topics will include digital footprints/online profiles, cyber-bullying and social media etiquette, as well as general cyber-safety. They will brainstorm safe and proper solutions to various online communication scenarios, and create a written top 10 tip sheet of netiquette & safety practices to follow. Future service action might include holding a netiquette workshop or being a role-model for younger kids. Extra Materials Needed: none Time: about 2 hours, 5 stations. |
Amazing Trees
(= Trees Cadette Badge) Scouts will be able to take a virtual trip to maple syrup farm to see how maple syrup is created from tree to table and appreciate the many products trees provide us. Scouts will learn about the diversity, structure & functions of different species of trees by doing an activity using a dichotomous identification key to name 10 mystery tree pictures. Scouts will begin to plan how they can take action to advocate for trees as they learn how humans relate to trees, why we need them, and how we are destroying them. They will hear from an arborist about their profession and learn some applicable skills for planting and caring for trees in the future. Scouts will be provided craft tutorials and will then share their own creative tree themed crafts with their peers. Time: about 3 hours, 5 stations. Materials needed: Craft supplies depending on the craft you choose to do (Station 3)- leaves, decoupage, foam brush, saran wrap, bowl/balloon or leaves, clay, felt, paint. |
Our World After Dark
(= Night Owl Cadette Badge) Scouts embark on 3 virtual field trips to visit an observatory/planetarium, a wolf wildlife & research center, and a night shift job. Scouts will then document and share their own virtual night time field trip around their local area as they experience a “power down” night. Directions are provided for a constellation craft. Night time art is celebrated with examples of nighttime paintings, poetry and mythical legends. Scouts will test their knowledge while trying to identify night sounds. Scouts will examine their night sky and identify stars and planets using an online planisphere. Lastly they will review the science of the night sky from moon phases to the auroras through an informative video. Extra Materials Needed: paper tube, scissors, tape, sharp pencil or pin, print out of craft document. Time: about 2 hours, 5 stations. |
Be Happy
(= Science of Happiness Cadette Badge) Scouts will investigate some key components to happiness: gratitude, connecting, and giving through scientific studies and statistics. They will be guided to create a gratitude plan, which can include making a craft. Scouts will practice connecting through a letter with a particular purpose or to a particular person outlined in the workshop. They will discover their character strengths through an online quiz and brainstorm how they can give of their strengths to others. Scouts will participate in a complaining challenge activity, choose and participate in a relaxation technique to relieve stress, and problem solve ways to look at certain negative situations more positively. They will share their "flow state" activity and discover what it means to be resilient through a historical example. Extra materials needed: optional supplies for craft (notebook, jar, decorations, glue), paper. Time: 1.5 - 2 hours, 5 stations |
Screenplay
(= Screenwriter Cadette Badge) What makes a good screenplay or play script? Scouts will answer this by watching an informative video and analyzing real Hollywood scripts. Then they will turn around and become screenwriters as they are led through the steps to create their own exciting screenplay. Scouts will explore creative brainstorming exercises by playing selected online story building games. They will make connections through a virtual interview video compilation featuring a professional, award winning screenwriter. Scouts are encouraged to share their original 12 page screenplay and/or 12 second "elevator" pitch for their film. This workshop can be followed up with the Digital Video Production workshop to learn techniques for filming the screenplay. Future service action might include writing and producing a movie or play about an important cause or message to others. Extra Materials Needed: none Time: about 2-3 hours. |
Detective Science
(= Special Agent Cadette Badge) Scout-It-Out has compiled a fun collection of online games and activities to practice observation skills, problem solving skills, and science lab skills involved in forensic science. Scouts will practice and investigate fingerprinting; learn about lie detectors and ethical issues behind their use; set up, use and understand the purpose of chromatography in forensics and practice the technique through a provided tutorial; make inferences about handwriting samples, decipher DNA (gel electrophoresis) results to identify a criminal; extract DNA from cells through a provided tutorial; and hear from experts involved in forensic detective work. This workshop is age appropriate and keeps information positively geared to the science aspect of detective work. Extra Materials Needed: 2-3 coffee filters, 16 oz. cup or glass, markers, tape, 99% rubbing alcohol, water. Optional: banana or strawberries, liquid soap, salt, strainer, spoon, fork, toothpick. Time: about 3-4 hours, 5 stations. |
Outdoor Trail Prep & Fun
(= Trailblazing Cadette Badge) Get ready to blaze the trail! Scouts check in with an expert with the Preventive Search & Rescue Team in the Grand Canyon to learn valuable tips about backpacking and camping in the back-country or primitive wilderness, including a demonstration on water purification techniques and a sample packing list and meal plan. They will gain know-how about how to navigate using a compass and topography maps in the wilderness and understand their importance in survival. Scouts will prepare their body, mind, and skills by practicing with their gear and taking a fun knowledge check quiz.Scouts are offered an opportunity to add to a provided list of ideas for fun activities to while camping or trekking. Based on what they learn and brainstorm, scouts will finalize their packing list while at the same time identifying and budgeting for items they will need to buy or borrow. Extra Materials: none Time: about 1-2 hours, 6 stations. |
