It is always a good idea, however, to have a non-electronic backup such as a compass and a map to navigate you if you lose the trail or get lost.

If you are planning an adventure in a national park, visit this site to start gathering more information: https://www.nps.gov/index.htm
If you are planning an adventure in a state park, this site might be a starting point: http://www.stateparks.com/
Other : Many sites or internet searches will provide you with trail descriptions and maps as well as information about camp sites and how to reserve a spot, gain permits etc.
Topographic maps are a useful tool when you are trekking in the back-country or on un-marked trails.
